As Dorset’s Chamber sets out its priorities for growth, the focus turns to whether long-standing barriers to business can be meaningfully addressed in a changing economy

As the Chamber of Commerce for Dorset, one of our key roles is to provide a voice for business, and to lobby on key issues (and blockers) for business growth. We’ve just drafted a series of ‘asks’ or policy statements on key issues for business which we will be shortly consulting on in terms of priorities.
At the heart of our approach is the need for a fair and modern business environment. Reforming business rates and simplifying regulatory frameworks will allow firms – particularly those on our high streets – to focus on growth, innovation and productivity rather than administrative burden.
Access to finance is equally critical, enabling businesses to invest, scale and respond confidently to changing market conditions.
We also place strong emphasis on people. Closer alignment between education and industry will ensure skills provision reflects real employer demand. Improving access to affordable housing will help businesses attract and retain the workforce they need.
Alongside this, prioritising workplace wellbeing is essential to building a productive and resilient workforce.
Infrastructure remains a key enabler of economic success. Reliable transport, digital connectivity and energy provision areall fundamental to supporting both urban and rural businesses, while improved planning processes will unlock further development opportunities.
Supporting sustainability and digital adoption are central to future competitiveness. Businesses want to transition to greener practices and embrace new technologies, including AI, but usually require practical support, clear incentives and accessible guidance to do so effectively.
Finally, strengthening resilience, supporting international trade and fostering collaboration with the not-for-profit sector will ensure Dorset’s economy remains adaptable, outward-looking and inclusive.
Together, these priorities reflect the real challenges and opportunities facing businesses today. They provide a coherent plan to secure Dorset’s economic future.
We’ll be discussing the impact of these issues with Dorset businesses and ensuring our voice is heard.
