The Gillingham Singers will perform their Spring Concert at St Michael’s Church, Mere, on Saturday 16th May at 7.30pm, with a programme that brings together two premières and established choral works.
The concert will include the UK première of Hallelujah by Ukrainian composer Evgenia Marchuk, a reflective work exploring themes of faith and resilience. Choir director Richard Nye says: ‘It will be a privilege to sing this reflective music outside Ukraine and to give Evgenia’s piece its first performance in the UK. The performance coincides with Evgenia’s children’s music festival in Ukraine, which she continues to run as director of a music school despite the ongoing war.’

Also receiving its first performance is Whoever Seeks by Blandford composer Stephen Deutsch, written especially for the choir.
The programme’s first half is completed by a mix of lighter and traditional pieces, including Mendelssohn’s Departure, Amy Beach’s Peace I Leave With You, and a new arrangement of Nobody Knows by choir member Steve Hale.
The second half is devoted to John Rutter’s Requiem, a more reflective work that will be particularly poignant for the choir, coming just a few months after the death of Sue, one of their longest-serving members.
Tickets are £10 and include a glass of wine. Please contact Carole on 07572 786416 or [email protected] to reserve tickets, or purchase from Novia Stationery, Gillingham, and Sprout & Flower, Mere.
