Three teams of Dorset volunteers took on a rather heavyweight challenge over the August Bank Holiday, hauling a 35-tonne Boeing 737 to raise £6,900 for Home-Start Wessex.
The annual Dorset Plane Pull challenges teams of 20 to drag the aircraft 50 metres, raising money for charities along the way. Home-Start Wessex fielded three teams this year – the Home-Start Heroes, Runway Ruckers and The Winton Way – with the Runway Ruckers powering their way to third place overall.
Among those taking part were staff and members from Snap Fitness in Winton, East Christchurch Sports and Social Club and Christchurch RFC.
‘What I loved most was seeing the friendly competitiveness between the gym teams and the rugby club come together for something much bigger than winning,’ said Darren Lewis, Home-Start Wessex’s Community Fundraising & Events Officer. ‘Everyone pulled together to support one great cause – helping local families in crisis across Dorset.’
Home-Start Wessex supports parents with at least one child under five through practical and emotional support, specialist groups and one-to-one home visits. Last year it supported 526 families, and the charity is currently looking for more volunteers across Dorset.
