A new high-speed attraction will take centre stage at this year’s Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show, with horseboarding set to make its first appearance in the Main Ring. The sport combines traditional horsemanship with mountainboarding, with teams of three – horse, rider and boarder – working together to complete a timed obstacle course. Using a tow line attached to the saddle, the boarder is pulled through a series of gates at speeds of up to 30mph: precision and timing are critical and results are often decided by fractions of a second.

Developed in England in the early 2000s, horseboarding has grown into an international competitive sport, but remains an unfamiliar sight at most county shows. Its inclusion this year adds a contemporary edge to a programme still rooted in agriculture and rural life.
The show returns on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th August, bringing with it a wide mix of livestock, equestrian displays and countryside traditions. Alongside the new main ring act, regular attractions include terrier and ferret racing, a family dog show and polo demonstrations.
Beyond the arena, visitors can explore trade stands ranging from agricultural machinery to artisan goods, alongside local food producers and the horticultural tent. The Heavy Horse Village and livestock grand parade remain central elements of the event.
Organisers say more than 30 activities will be available across the two days, with a continued focus on hands-on experiences, particularly for younger visitors learning about farming and food production.
Advance tickets are available until 13th August, with options for single and two-day visits.
