Then and Now: Buckhorn Weston, 1939 and 2026

Date:

Buckhorn Weston Post Office and General Stores. Kelly’s Directory says E Feltham was proprietor in 1931. The sign over the door reads C Whites – had it changed hands? Who is the man, hands proudly on hips, in the street in 1939?

Welcome home. Thanks for PC. Glad you had good weather. Between 1pm Sat and 9.30am Tuesday we had 8 thunderstorms. 2 roads within 4 miles were impassable to cars for 2 or 3 days. I managed by going on banks and through fields. A third, 5 miles off, was goodness knows how many feet deep and I went through somebody’s orchard.

The Western Gazette produced numerous reports on the these summer storms, the most vivid being: THUNDERSTORM STOPS
HARVESTING. An unusually severe thunderstorm swept through on Saturday afternoon. It is upwards of 20 years ago that so violent a storm occurred. Vivid lightning in rapid succession, terrific thunder, accompanied by sheets of rain and hail, drove people from sunshine to shelter of home or shed. Drains quickly filled and overflowed, electric supplies were cut off. During the half-an-hour, 2.15 to 2.45, there fell 0.66in. of rain. The storm stopped as suddenly as it had begun, and brilliant sunshine from cloudless skies followed. Unfortunately, all haymaking and harvesting was made impossible for the rest of the weekend. Further violent thunderstorms took place on Saturday and Sunday nights, too.
