A Cats Protection branch that has helped homeless and abandoned cats across Mid Dorset for more than 30 years is looking for new volunteers as three of its most experienced members prepare to step down.

Branch Team Leader Kate Bevan, Treasurer Deb Wheeler and Cat Welfare Team Leader Nicki Salmond will all leave their roles at the end of the summer. Between them, they have contributed more than 70 years of service to the charit
The Mid Dorset branch has been operating since 1994, and currently helps rehome around 85 cats each year across the DT10, DT11, SP7, SP8 and BH21 postcode areas.
Kate, who joined after responding to a volunteer appeal and became team leader in 2003, says the branch’s future depends on finding people willing to take on the three core roles. Over the years she has worked with countless cats, including feral animals rescued from farms and kittens requiring urgent veterinary care. One recent litter of four kittens arrived suffering from severe cat flu but recovered after treatment and later became affectionate pets ready for new homes. ‘That’s really what it’s all about,’ she says. ‘Making life better for cats who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own.’
The branch says training and support are available for anyone interested in helping continue its work.
