Autonomous farm robot begins Dorset trials

Date:

A new autonomous robot designed to tackle one of farming’s most persistent weeds is set to begin field trials across Dorset this summer.
Developed by South West technology company Robotriks, the electrically powered machine, nicknamed Raggy, uses artificial intelligence and machine vision to identify and mechanically remove ragwort, a poisonous plant that poses a serious risk to horses and livestock. The trials will take place on farms and other land around the county following final testing at Dorset Innovation Park.

Ragwort is traditionally removed by hand, a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. By targeting individual plants rather than relying on a widespread chemical treatment, the developers hope the technology will reduce labour demands while protecting grazing animals and the wider environment.
The project has been developed by Robotriks in partnership with Dorset Council, Telint and Neutral Networks, with support from the Qualcomm for Good initiative. While designed initially to tackle ragwort, the underlying robotic platform has been created as a modular system capable of carrying out a range of agricultural tasks in future.
Jake Shaw-Sutton, director of Robotriks, said the machine had been built for real farm conditions using advanced machine vision and a fully electric platform.
The trials also reinforce Dorset’s growing reputation as a centre for autonomous technology, with Dorset Innovation Park increasingly attracting companies developing next-generation robotics and uncrewed systems.
The results of Raggy’s first season of field trials are expected to help shape the next stage of its development before wider commercial deployment.
