Like many people, I’ve enjoyed the long, warm days we’ve experienced this summer (and personally I hate the winter months). But while the sunshine has been welcome, it has also prompted me to reflect on a much bigger issue. Climate change is no longer something we talk about as a future possibility – it is happening now, and its effects are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Experts are telling us that the weather we experience today may be as stable as we will ever know in our lifetime. That is a powerful message and one we should all take seriously.
We are already seeing the consequences. Heatwaves place additional pressure on the NHS as more people become vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Farmers face unpredictable growing conditions that affect food production and prices. Transport networks struggle under extreme temperatures, disrupting journeys and impacting businesses and communities alike. Schools have had to close, making things very difficult for working parents and carers.
The challenge can sometimes feel overwhelming, but there is reason for optimism. Every business, whatever its size, can make a positive contribution. Reducing energy use, cutting waste, reviewing travel, embracing new technology and making more sustainable purchasing decisions are all practical steps that can make a real difference.
At Dorset Chamber, we believe businesses have an important role to play in protecting the environment while continuing to grow and succeed. Becoming more sustainable is not just about reducing carbon emissions; it is also about building stronger, more resilient organisations that are better prepared for the future.
The choices we make today will shape the Dorset that future generations inherit. By working together—as businesses, communities and individuals—we can help protect the place we are proud to call home, while creating a stronger, healthier and more sustainable future for everyone.
