Gillingham’s new road finally opens after three-year wait

Date:

A new road linking the eastern and western sides of Gillingham has finally opened to traffic – almost three years after construction was completed.

The 1.3km route, officially named Madjeston Way – the name suggested by Gillingham Town Council – connects New Road (B3092) with Shaftesbury Road (B3081), providing an alternative route across the town.

The new Madjeston Way is expected to ease traffic pressure within Gillingham, providing a new link road with access for the new housing developments

Previously known informally as Kiln Way during development, the road was completed in 2023 but remained closed while work progressed on the surrounding housing development. Dorset Council says construction has now reached a stage where the road can safely open.

Madjeston Way has a 30mph speed limit, with shared-use footways and cycleways on both sides. Traffic lights control its junction with Shaftesbury Road, while at the western end, vehicles joining or leaving East Stour must give way to traffic on Madjeston Way.

The road forms part of Gillingham’s southern expansion, which includes plans for new homes, a primary school, health facilities, sports pitches, shops and green spaces.

New Madjeston Way (previously Kiln Way) in Gillingham is now open

Funded through a £6.31 million government Housing Infrastructure Fund allocation, the road is intended to reduce pressure on existing routes through the town.

Drivers are being asked to take extra care while housing construction continues alongside the new road.
