Tom, a 16-year-old from Sherborne has been named one of just five young writers shortlisted for the 2026 BBC Young Writers’ Award with the University of Cambridge. Selected from hundreds of entries, Bryanston pupil Tom’s short story Funny explores the darker side of being the class clown, following a boy who uses jokes and pranks to cope with the loss of his father and a growing sense of loneliness. As his attempts to entertain those around him go too far, the consequences become increasingly serious.
Judges praised the story’s originality, ‘unique voice’ and mature handling of peer pressure and psychological bullying.
Lauren Layfield, Radio 1 presenter and Chair of the 2026 judging panel, said the five stories had been chosen for their ‘confidence and creativity’, with this year’s writers tackling subjects ranging from artificial intelligence and conflict to peer pressure and friendship.
She added ‘the future of storytelling is bright’.
The winner was announced on 29th September as 17-year-old Eloise Barrett from Birmingham, for her story Bloodshed in Rafah. Reaching the final five represents a significant national achievement for Tom.
Funny, alongside the other shortlisted stories, is available to listen to through the BBC National Short Story Award podcast on BBC Sounds.
