Patrick Monahan has spent much of his life being mistaken for something he isn’t – and now he’s turned the experience into a comedy show.
The Iranian-born stand-up comes to The Mowlem in Swanage next April with the gloriously titled I’m Not a Terrorist, I’m Freddie Mercury, a new show built around identity, prejudice and the assumptions he has encountered since moving to England in 1980.
‘If I had a £1 for every time someone called me a terrorist, I’d have enough money to run my own terrorist organisation,’ says Patrick. ‘I’ve more in common with Freddie Mercury than Hezbollah.’
Visas turned down, extra checks and restricted access all provide material as Monahan explores the more absurd side of being judged by appearance and background. ‘I’ve 60 minutes to prove I’m not a terrorist,’ he says.
Provocative, hilarious and surprisingly uplifting, Monahan is a familiar face from television, winning ITV’s Show Me the Funny and with appearnces on The One Show, Celebrity Squares, Fake Reaction and Pointless Celebrities.
The Swanage date is part of The Mowlem’s growing 2027 comedy programme, bringing Monahan’s combination of personal storytelling and fast-paced stand-up to Purbeck.
