A former Sherborne Boys Head Boy has been named Rising Star at the Independent School of the Year Awards, recognising his academic achievements, leadership and work encouraging young people to become more involved in civic life.
Johnny Moesel, who left Sherborne last year and is now studying History and Politics at the University of Oxford, received the award at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 14th October.
During his time at Sherborne, Johnny won several national academic competitions, including the Townsend Warner History Prize and competitions organised by the Society for Army Historical Research and the British Association for American Studies.
As Head Boy, he led a whole-school review of independent learning, became the first pupil lead-mentor of the Junior Academic Programme and established an academic exhibition journal featuring work by pupils from Sherborne and neighbouring state schools. He also secured sponsorship for the publication from Thames & Hudson.
Beyond school, Johnny founded Civic Shift, a non-profit initiative aimed at encouraging greater youth participation in civic life, attracting support from MPs and senior civil servants.
His achievements extended into sport. He represented Sherborne in several first teams and competed internationally for England at under-18 level in fly-fishing, while also supporting environmental conservation and mentoring younger anglers.
Simon Heard, Headmaster at Sherborne Boys, said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled that Johnny has been recognised with this prestigious award. He was an exceptional pupil and Head Boy who made an extraordinary contribution to life at Sherborne, not simply through his remarkable achievements, but through his kindness, integrity and commitment to others.
‘What made Johnny so special was his determination to use every opportunity to make a positive difference. He inspired those around him through his intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit and quiet confidence. We are immensely proud of everything he achieved during his time with us and delighted to see him continuing his journey at Oxford.’
Johnny also helped strengthen links between Sherborne Boys and Sherborne Girls during his time at the school. He is now continuing his studies at Oxford, having received national recognition for his contribution to school life and the wider community.
