Our Commitment
Dorset Life is an independent digital publication committed to producing journalism that is accurate, fair, balanced and in the public interest.
We believe local journalism plays an important role in informing communities, holding organisations to account, celebrating Dorset’s people and places, and encouraging thoughtful public debate.
Our editorial decisions are made independently and are never influenced by advertisers, sponsors or commercial partners.
Our Editorial Philosophy
Dorset Life exists to tell the stories that matter across Dorset. We believe good local journalism should inform, question, celebrate and connect communities. We aim to report thoughtfully and fairly, giving space to voices that are often overlooked while maintaining the highest standards of independence and integrity. We are not driven by clickbait or sensationalism, but by a commitment to producing journalism that readers can trust.
Accuracy
We take reasonable steps to ensure that the information we publish is accurate at the time of publication.
This includes:
- checking facts wherever reasonably possible;
- seeking comment from relevant individuals or organisations where appropriate;
- distinguishing clearly between fact, opinion and sponsored content;
- correcting significant errors promptly when they are identified.
While we strive for accuracy, mistakes can occasionally happen. When they do, we believe they should be acknowledged openly.
Fairness
We aim to report fairly and responsibly.
Where stories involve criticism of individuals, businesses or organisations, we will normally seek their response before publication where it is reasonable and practical to do so.
Not every story requires every perspective to be included, but we aim to present information honestly and in context.
Independence
Editorial decisions are made solely by the editorial team.
Advertising does not influence our journalism.
The acceptance of advertising or sponsorship does not guarantee editorial coverage, and editorial coverage should never be interpreted as an endorsement.
Sponsored or paid-for content will be clearly identified where appropriate.
Opinion
Dorset Life publishes opinion pieces, guest columns and readers’ views.
Opinion articles are clearly presented as such and represent the views of the author rather than Dorset Life unless explicitly stated otherwise.
We welcome a range of perspectives provided they are expressed respectfully and remain within the law.
Anonymous Sources
Where appropriate, we may protect the identity of confidential sources.
We will only grant anonymity where there is a genuine public interest or where revealing a source’s identity could place them at risk or discourage important information from coming forward.
The identity of anonymous sources will always be known to the editor.
Corrections
If we discover that we have published inaccurate information, we will correct it as quickly as reasonably possible.
Depending on the nature of the error, we may:
- amend the article;
- add a clarification or editor’s note;
- publish a correction;
- remove content where appropriate.
We do not normally remove accurate published material simply because it has become inconvenient or unpopular.
Reader Complaints
We welcome constructive feedback about our journalism.
Anyone who believes an article is inaccurate, unfair or otherwise falls below our editorial standards is encouraged to contact us.
Complaints should include:
- the article title or web address;
- the nature of the concern;
- any supporting evidence where appropriate.
We aim to acknowledge complaints promptly and investigate them fairly.
Community Standards
We are committed to treating contributors, interviewees and readers with courtesy and respect.
We expect the same standard from anyone engaging with Dorset Life through email, social media or other communication channels.
We reserve the right not to publish submissions or comments that are unlawful, abusive, defamatory, threatening or discriminatory.
Editorial Responsibility
The Editor has overall responsibility for Dorset Life’s editorial standards and the application of this policy.
Our editorial approach is guided by the principles of:
- accuracy;
- fairness;
- independence;
- integrity;
- accountability;
- respect for our readers and our community.
