STANDING upright in the front of his 1944 World War 2 US Willys jeep, his driver seated beside him, Dick Shepard of Sturminster Newton turned, looked around and, with an arm signal reminiscent of General George Patton, waved his convoy forward. There was a war to be won and he was determined to be in the vanguard: he was a leader and where he went his men would follow.
