WHEN Dorset was in the throes of the recent pandemic, the district nurse was one of the unsung stars. As in the rest of the country, district nurses played a vital role in caring for people marooned in their homes during the extensive lockdowns. Dorset has a rich history, dating back to 1896, of providing a home nursing service. The scene was set with the foundation of the Queen Victoria Jubilee Institute for Nurses in 1887, which established district nursing as a profession.
