The Dorset walk – Maiden Newton and Cattistock

FOR the first few miles of the journey from its source at Evershot, the river Frome is a comparatively insignificant stream. During the half-mile or so that this walk follows it, the Frome becomes more impressive and one can begin to recognise it as the substantial river that eventually flows out into Poole Harbour.
The stretch alongside the river ends at Maiden Newton, where the walk begins and finishes. Maiden Newton is a good starting-point for exploring this part of the Frome Valley, although it is not an especially picturesque village, nor does it have any outstanding history. Its parish church did suffer damage in two wars three centuries apart: the Civil War left bullet holes in the door thanks to Cromwell’s men, while a German aircraft of World War 2 sent a bullet through the east window.
