THE villages of the Bride Valley are something of a linguistic obstacle course. Puncknowle is pronounced ‘punnel’ to go with ‘funnel’. Long Bredy shouldn’t be confused with its compounded sibling, Littlebredy, which in turn shouldn’t be confused with the neighbouring Litton Cheney. ‘Cheney’ is pronounced four different ways, depending on who you ask, but most locals say ‘Cheany.’
