KING George III was very fond of Weymouth. Between 1789 and 1805, he visited the town for long stays in summer or autumn, when he would review the Fleet and bathe daily in the sea. A wheeled wooden bathing machine was made for his personal use in 1791 and a local band hired to play ‘God Save the King’ each time he entered the water.
