John Hodder’s father was from Portland so he paid many visits to Dorset as a child while following his dad, who was in the RAF, round the world. John now lives in Cambridgeshire but frequently visits the county that has meant so much to him all his life. Here he chooses eight places, the thought of which would sustain him on our mythical desert island.

Hod Hill
Iron Age hillforts stand out in the Dorset landscape and Maiden Castle near Dorchester is the largest in Britain. As a child it was merely pointed out as we neared Dorchester, and it took my breath away when I finally visited.
