BETWEEN 1927 and 1962, massive steam locomotives hauling the carriages of the ‘Pines Express’, crammed with excited holidaymakers from the North and Midlands, thundered through Shillingstone station on their way to Bournemouth’s pine-scented chines. It was literally a breath of fresh air for families taking their annual leave during the industrial period of shut-down known as Wakes Week.
