Purbeck’s unseen places

Andy Farrer takes us on a tour of Purbeck, without the usual pot-boilers

IF YOU ASK SOMEONE to define what (or rather where) Purbeck is, you’ll get a range of answers. Some will say: ‘Oh, the Purbecks, that’s everything below Wareham to, er, a bit further west.’ Natural England includes the coastal strip as far west as Ringstead Bay.
Others will reply that the ‘Purbecks’ are the hills, and that the Isle of Purbeck is bounded by Poole Harbour to the East, the River Frome to the north and its western edge is a line from Luckford Lake diagonally south-west to the sea at Lulworth.
