In west Dorset, Peter Thomas and Trevor Ball are producing exceptional examples of the wood-turner’s art. Rachel Gower has been to see them.

‘BUT you’ll want to come and see it, won’t you?’ asked the man on the phone, who had put an advertisement in a local paper to sell a second-hand lathe.
‘There wouldn’t be much point,’ replied Peter Thomas cheerfully. ‘I wouldn’t know what I was looking at.’
