CHALDON Herring keeps up Dorset’s reputation for unusual place names, but here the right answer is definitely that the fishy part of the name came from a local family: the Harangs, who were lords of the manor in the 12th century and gave their name to other places in Dorset, including Langton Herring and Herringston.
