Why we love Wareham

Every town is unique, but Alan Illingworth discovers that Wareham has a special quality that attracts visitors and inspires loyalty among its residents and traders

WHEN the invading Danes were rampaging round England in the 9th century, King Alfred ordered a number of towns in the south of the country to be protected by earth walls. Today, those walls survive in any sort of state of preservation in only two places: Wallingford in Oxfordshire and,
more visibly, Wareham.
