Boscombe’s most iconic building hides a history of broken dreams. Rodger Witt investigates.

San Remo Towers in Sea Road near Boscombe Pier was named after the celebrity-packed San Remo apartment building in New York. Pale brick and white rendering, along with balconies and fanciful decoration, add character and flair. The height was restricted by the Town Planning Committee. Staggered storeys further reduce its visual impact on the surroundings.
CHRISTOPHER Veitch had a new home. His recently completed flat provided sea views and three airy bedrooms. The building that contained it had a communal underground car park and extravagant roof-top sun terrace. It had telephones, central heating and a plug-in vacuuming system.
